Interactive Routes: East and West

Tracing the journey and revisiting the trace. What are the patterns of space and time that interact during the experience of travel, overland, from the Rockies to Toronto and back again to the West coast?

How might these be documented, traced, interwoven, re-visted, re-presented?

Two weeks passed...

I made this colour grid at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.172157,-115.561417 using http://twitter.com/gathererapp

Things I see here are:
Rhythms in different directions with complex patterns and relationships

I notice:
Two weeks have passed, a third just about  to begin

The colours in this grid are like:
Looking forward, Looking back

Hunter Gatherer - remote

// Aha! Time catches up now from remote places - the camel has surely arrived! (10 days after I arrived! Someone told me a couple of days ago that it takes a day per hour of timezone crossed - I'm a bit behind the times! (7 hours from UK to Banff. Maybe my camel took the weekend off.) This is the original post that the bane of blogger 'lost' . I wonder how different it was to my replacement... and how to I categorise this in the posts - from the date of posting, loss or rediscovery? Let's go for a now back then. So if you're reading this from then, this could just be how premonition works.... Spaces of thought folded back in time. Actually, there's a clue I give myself (23:59)//

Whilst I've been here I've also been working on content for the website of my UK project Hunter Gatherer. The caches were all completed in a busy period with two Yorkshire trips in the couple of weeks before leaving for Banff. But inevitably there's more... the first task was sending final info on cache locations and 'care' to Chrysalis, the project commissioners and co-ordinators, to manage in my physical) absence. Then there was the rest of the content for the Gatherer3 website which Sean is compiling to integrate the 'blip' display mechanism he's built, and hence the gatherer gallery and map view, alongside the films, info, audio and photos that will tell the story as the creature emerges.

It's a lot of work. Enjoyable but continuous. And interesting in some aspects to do from afar, but equally I'd like to be finished, so as to get on with bringing Canadian magical creatures to life through material and interactions gathered here...

The great thing is that the website should be able to multipurpose and accommodate magical creatures of many kinds. It was most exciting to write the text and make 'future-casting' colour grids for the Canada Commons and 'future projects' of geoartcaches that may spring up as the creature travels the world.

My plan is to build and hide caches in the man places I am staying this summer. If any local cachers read this and fancy taking on surrogate care of an extra (friendly, living) cache - please let me know!

Meditation

in the mountains, a yogic practice with the breath (familiar, favourite, welcome, refreshed).

I experience turning through time.

Who are you today, (name)? I would love to love the you you are today.

The end of my book, and a mantra for a wonderful life.

I feel the face of the mountain, a magical creature of rock, fur, whiskers, twitching nose, that is mirrored in the soaring of birds.

I remember the creature I felt emerging a few days ago, I don't think I documented it here (or anywhere concrete as yet) (is a blog concrete?) The tapping of a shell, egg, opening, breaking through, (that's right, it was Tuesday after the morning swim and somehow somewhere between then, the geology walk and the studio...[an imagining, a whisper in the wind - sings the creature of the Dales.. (sshhhh!!!)]
Yes, arriving here in the rocky mountains at banff is like breaking out of the shell and membrane of an egg and emerging.. (to my surprise!) as a tiny dinosaur-type-thing!! A baby mountain dinosaur, newly hatched. As if!

There are different creatures that live and emerge in this place. I feel the weight and importance of the places I've visited these past few months, of Ancient greece.

Colour Grid 1000063

Origami. That was the other beautiful suggestion on the colour grids from my studio-mate yesterday. The strong bright colours , folds of paper, 3G Rubik cube emerging, of origami.

This grid moves, has so many patterns rhythms dynamics tensions I can see it's form spring to life through this magical ancient (?)paper art. Where can I find origami paper? I can make my own, practice paper constructions like the 10 steps from 0 to 10 of foundation exercises. Made real with the grids.

I see how quick time goes how delicate to hold the days plan. Struck how after even 4 days here a simple task of putting water in the right hole, coffee in the tray ( take sachet out of foil wrap first) jug under tray and switch to on ( power remains a constant, no need to replug) such a simple task has superceded me several times already since coming here! I have a first sensation of what it may be like to be a nun in a monastery!

Things I see here are:
Harmony balance a grounded sky. As above so below.

I notice:
Patterns and vibrations a strong cohesive form.
I notice that as I scroll up to look at it I can touch it with my fingers
changing it's colours clumsily if I'm not careful.

The colours in this grid are like:
A song of strength, equal tension, rhythm. normality

I made this colour grid at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.171619,-115.561142 using http://twitter.com/gathererapp

This is a very beautiful thing, it's quite delicate to hold. As I made it I knew exactly as it should be. As I wrote of it I inadvertently changed it's form several times. I had to think hard and be careful to return to to how it was made. The logic wasn't as clear in reverse. But when I got there and trusted it was right then I saw the original beauty more clearly. Defined on it's fragility and strong in it's repercussions, resonant pathways stretching out way beyond the grid.
This is the remembering that I take as a tool into the balance of seeing- making-doing-being and Writing-reflecting-seeking to understand. For understand comes from the making where one stands under the feeling of what is become; and knowledge (spoken) comes from the remembering of the action in the truth of what is made. Not from making it anew.

Feeling a rhythm

Oh, the textile metaphor has turned into sound!

Or maybe it's the automatic movement of a hand passing a shuttle through the threads of the warp.

Anyway, I slept! Until just before 5am, nearly dawn. No news from Jen (the walk should be started by now) so I continue with the post from last night. 20:20 it started, 07:20 it was finished! Then around 5.30 they come, three together, emails from midday in the Midlands countryside. I feel bound to respond. To break the silence and record the spoken word. Bound not by process, obligation or intent. Rather moved to, inevitable consequence of interaction, how could I (in all being) not?

The texts (sent be email mobile to mobile to avoid texting charges to my phone here in Canada) I'll post as a separate thread under projects, Jen, soundwalks (until it acquires another name).

I could swim this-morning (rather than at night), eat a hearty breakfast and go to my studio :) feeling the rhythm of the day.

Light and Dark, first impressions and topsy turvy time!

Banff light on Saturday afternoon
Snow on Sunday morn!

It does feel like a different time zone.

In fact my first impressions on arrival yesterday early afternoon were quite different to when I've travelled to Canada before.

The first time it struck me that I'd travelled all this way to the other side of the earth (almost) and yet it felt so much the same - earth, rocks, trees, and in fact a very young landscape (geology, tree lifespan, farmed and built environment) in comparison with Britain. That was eleven years ago.

The second time, last year, was all about journeys, routes, and people. timelines stretched over space. Visits, meetings and wedding lines stretched over the space of human time.

This time, it strikes me how different the planet must be in so many places all at once. It has been the most beautiful, luscious spring I ever remember this year. And commuting between the West Country, Midlands and Yorkshire Dales I have really ravished enjoying every moment of it unfold. Beltaine used to follow when the May blossom (hawthorn) blossomed. And in the South West it is several weeks ahead of the Dales, yet behind the central London area, and of course it varies with height, wind exposure, direction, incline of land....

Here the spring hasn't really arrived. The winter had just about left, though this morning I look out to powder filled skies and snow falling steadily on the ground! And arriving yesterday I had this real sense of people buzzing from place to place on the surface of the earth like bees (overheard snippets of countries visited near and far). And each place on the earth has its season, is bound within it's sunrise and sunset. Each place holds a rhythm of earthly time, in a way by which we no longer do - as we slip from one dimension into the next. The earth feels small and delicate, specific and finely tuned.

The light here is different. Although the land is very brown and trees still bare, the light rings the edges of the clouds and the patterns seem clearly defined.

I didn't expect to feel that sense of boundedness, yet here enclosed in the mountains, even the water in the swimming pool feels different. Very soft, very fine, but to move through it requires much more consolidated effort than before. The air is pure and free but thinner too. Is it altitude I'm feeling or the properties of this place, the effect of jet-lag and a busy lead-up to my trip, or something more about this journey I'm on?

Reflective time, before the program begins tomorrow. A slight apprehension - what is not yet known. How will they be, these people with whom 3 weeks (and more) will pass? And will the snow continue to obscure the light?

Time slips strangely from one hour to the next. Emails, blogs, photos, clocks, tell different stories of time from, in and to different places. And I slept exhausted after my swim. Only to find unexpected waking time when the fire alarm summoned us from our beds for 2 hours of the night. No good to sleep then. Now it's morning so maybe I'll swim again, sleep again, and see what the time says when....
